Encomara's Squid system, designed to simplify the installation of floating offshore wind turbines, has received Product Design Assessment (PDA) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). This certification follows an Approval in Principle granted seven months prior and marks a crucial step towards commercial adoption. The patented technology integrates pre-installed mooring lines and electrical connections into a single subsea unit, enabling a 'plug & play' installation process. Modelling studies, supported by United Kingdom — Scottish Enterprise, suggest the Squid system could halve installation times and save developers £1 billion per gigawatt. Onshore demonstrations are scheduled for July at the Aurora Energy Services facility in Huntly, followed by inshore wet testing and customer demonstrations at Ardersier in August. Patents for the Squid system are secured across Europe, Asia, and Australia, with Aurora Energy Services' Huntly facility identified for potential high-volume manufacturing.
