Both the United Kingdom and Japan view fusion energy as a critical component for future energy security, economic growth, and climate goals, with the United Kingdom investing 2.5 billion in its national Fusion Strategy and Japan designating fusion energy as a key strategic area. The partnership aims to leverage each nation's expertise, such as Japan's experience with superconducting magnets and tritium technologies, to accelerate the development of projects like the United Kingdom's Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) prototype facility.
