Researchers at Charité - Universitaetsmedizin Berlin, led by Florian Nima Fleckenstein, have developed and successfully tested a new minimally invasive procedure called Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) using rapidly resorbable gelatin-based microspheres for patients suffering from osteoarthritis-related knee pain. The study, published in Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America, involved 194 participants and demonstrated significant and lasting pain relief, improved function, and enhanced quality of life for at least 12 months. This procedure targets abnormal blood vessels around the arthritic knee joint, reducing inflammation and pain without surgery, offering a new treatment option for patients who do not respond to conservative measures but are not candidates for joint replacement.
