Canada Bill C-286 Psilocybin Access

PsyCan, Canada's trade association for the medical psychedelics sector, has welcomed the introduction of Bill C-286, also known as Thomas' Bill. This private member's bill aims to create a clearer and more predictable regulated pathway for medical access to psilocybin and psilocin in Canada, while still preserving Canada — Health Canada's drug-approval process. The bill seeks to amend the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Food and Drugs Act to reclassify psilocybin and psilocin and require priority review for new drug submissions. The bill is named in tribute to Thomas Hartle, a Saskatchewan father who faced bureaucratic delays in accessing psilocybin therapy for his stage IV colon cancer. MP Corey Tochor introduced the bill, highlighting the need for modernized policies given the slow and unpredictable nature of Canada — Health Canada's current Special Access Program for psychedelics. The move is supported by public opinion, with a 2025 Abacus poll showing majority Canadian support for medical psilocybin under supervision.
