Researchers have discovered the earliest known plague outbreak, dating back approximately 5,500 years ago in the Lake Baikal region of Siberia. Ancient DNA from hunter-gatherer burial sites revealed the presence of Yersinia pestis, the bacterium causing plague, in 18 of 46 individuals. This finding, published in Nature (journal), challenges previous assumptions that significant plague outbreaks only occurred after the advent of agriculture and dense settlements. The study, led by Ruairidh Macleod and senior-authored by Eske Willerslev and Martin Sikora, indicates that these ancient strains were highly lethal, especially for children, due to a unique superantigen. The outbreaks are believed to have spread from marmots to humans, then via human-to-human transmission, devastating these nomadic communities. This discovery pushes back the timeline of plague's impact on humankind by at least 200 years and provides crucial insights into the pathogen's evolution.
