Scientists at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB), led by Christeen Davis and senior author Rajesh Chandramohanadas, have identified a new mechanism by which malaria parasites survive treatment with Artemisinin, the most widely used anti-malarial drug. The study, published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, reveals that immature red blood cells (reticulocytes) provide a protective environment, challenging the long-held belief that drug resistance is solely due to genetic changes in the parasite. This breakthrough, in collaboration with Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Cosmopolitan Hospital, and CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, suggests future therapies could target host-parasite interactions, potentially improving treatment outcomes, especially for vulnerable populations.
