The renewal of the partnership between NNPC and TotalEnergies is expected to have a positive impact on the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) ratings of both companies, potentially attracting more environmentally conscious investors. For Nigeria, the continued deployment of AUSEA technology could lead to improved environmental compliance and a more sustainable oil and gas industry, which may enhance its global standing in energy transition efforts.
NNPC and TotalEnergies have renewed their agreement for another 24 months to continue deploying the Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology across NNPC's upstream operations. This drone-based technology, developed by TotalEnergies in partnership with France — French National Centre for Scientific Research and University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne, detects, measures, and helps reduce methane and carbon emissions. The extension aims to support NNPC's commitments under the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, and its goal of achieving near-zero methane emissions by 2030. TotalEnergies has already eliminated routine gas flaring across all its assets in Nigeria, with AUSEA playing a significant role in this achievement. The partnership underscores both companies' dedication to cleaner energy operations and environmental sustainability in Nigeria's oil and gas sector.
