The Nigeria has launched a N50 million Social Determinants of Health Fund for cancer patients, aimed at addressing non-medical barriers to treatment such as transportation, accommodation, and feeding costs. The initiative, unveiled by Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, is a key outcome of recommendations from the National Cancer Control Plan Technical Working Group, chaired by Folakemi T. Odedina and co-chaired by Malami Aliyu. Over 600 patients have applied, with more than 200 verified to receive at least N100,000 each. The fund complements existing interventions and seeks additional contributions from corporate organizations and philanthropists. The American Cancer Society, through its President Abidemi Omonisi, welcomed the fund, emphasizing its importance in improving access to care and reducing Nigeria's cancer burden by 50 percent by 2030, a goal supported by President Bola Tinubu's administration.
