The successful brownfield automation by ForwardX Robotics at Stellantis — DS Automobiles's China — Dalian facility demonstrates the viability of modernizing existing factories without production downtime. This could lead to increased adoption of similar automation solutions across the automotive industry, benefiting robotics companies like ForwardX Robotics and improving efficiency for automotive manufacturers.
ForwardX Robotics successfully deployed 484 Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) at Stellantis — DS Automobiles's China — Dalian manufacturing facility. This brownfield automation project, one of the largest in the automotive industry, was implemented over a year without disrupting the facility's daily production of approximately 1,000 vehicles. The AMRs support intralogistics processes in the bodyshop and final assembly workshops, covering 127 material categories. Nicolas Chee, CEO of ForwardX Robotics, emphasized the challenges of brownfield automation and the importance of integration and orchestration. This project serves as a model for other OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers looking to upgrade existing facilities.
