A two-year, placebo-controlled, double-blind study conducted by the Keck Medicine of USC found that high-dose fish oil supplements, specifically those containing Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), do not improve memory, cognitive function, or prevent brain cell loss in adults at increased risk of Alzheimer s disease. Despite DHA successfully reaching the brain, as confirmed by a 17% increase in cerebrospinal fluid levels, participants who took the supplements performed no better on cognitive tests and showed similar rates of hippocampus shrinkage compared to a placebo group. Lead investigator Hussein Naji Yassine emphasized that there is no 'silver bullet' for preventing Alzheimer's and that healthy lifestyle habits, such as a Mediterranean-style diet, regular exercise, and quality sleep, remain the strongest defense. The study's results challenge the widespread belief in fish oil supplements as a preventive measure for Alzheimer's, impacting a market where Americans spend over $1 billion annually.
