Colorectal Cancer Microbiome Signature Discovered

Researchers from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Leiden University Medical Center, and the Mi-EOCRC consortium conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of nearly 6,800 gut microbiome profiles and 906 intestinal tissue samples. Led by Georg Zeller and Michael Zimmermann, the study, published in Cell Host & Microbe, identified a robust and universal microbial signature associated with colorectal cancer, detectable even in early-stage tumors. They developed computational approaches and a machine learning algorithm to integrate diverse datasets, overcoming previous reproducibility challenges. The research also found a link between lower dietary fiber intake and a stronger cancer-associated microbiome pattern, and provided detailed insights into Fusobacterium subspecies, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum subspecies animalis. While not yet a diagnostic test, this work lays crucial groundwork for future microbiome-based detection, risk assessment, and prevention strategies for colorectal cancer.
