A large-scale observational study conducted by researchers at Guangzhou Medical University, published in General Psychiatry, has found a significant link between higher levels of daytime light exposure and a lower risk of developing dementia. The study tracked 87,577 adults from the United Kingdom using wrist-worn accelerometers with light sensors over a median of 8.1 years. It revealed that average daytime light exposure above 1,000 lux was associated with a 16% reduced risk of dementia, with even greater reductions for exposure exceeding 5,000 lux. Notably, less than 0.7 hours of bright daytime light per day was a stronger predictor of dementia than six established clinical risk factors. The study suggests that optimizing environmental light exposure could be a non-pharmacological strategy for dementia prevention, particularly in high-risk populations.
