Researchers from North Carolina State University, the Université de Montréal, and the University of Pennsylvania have discovered that a decrease in the front leg stride length of senior dogs is associated with canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS), also known as canine dementia. This finding, led by Natasha Jog, suggests a new objective measure for early detection of CDS, which affects up to 60% of dogs over 11. The study, published in Frontiers Media, highlights that cognitive decline has a greater impact on stride length than age alone, and specifically affects front legs due to their role in direction changes and braking, which rely on higher-level brain processing. While not a standalone diagnostic tool, this observation, combined with questionnaires and veterinary exams, could help owners and vets monitor aging dogs and implement lifestyle interventions.
