The AWESOME (Advanced Wind Energy System Optimisation & Monitoring for Efficiency) project, funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program with approximately 9 million euros, has been launched. Led by Kongsberg Gruppen — Kongsberg Maritime and supported by 14 European partners, including Odfjell, Neoliner Origin, DNV, Bound4blue, and Chantiers de l Atlantique, the project aims to reduce uncertainty around wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) in shipping. It will deliver validated tools, standardized methodologies, and real-world performance data to accelerate the adoption of cost-effective emission reduction solutions. The project includes full-scale demonstrations on an Odfjell chemical tanker, retrofitted with Bound4blue's eSAIL suction sails, and Neoliner Origin's newbuild Neoliner Originr Origin, designed with Chantiers de l Atlantique's SOLIDSAIL rigs. This initiative seeks to tackle technical, operational, and regulatory barriers, helping fleets meet emerging frameworks like FuelEU Maritime and future International — International Maritime Organization standards, thereby postponing the adoption of costly low-carbon fuels.
