Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, including Kevin Schichlein, Ilona Jaspers, and M. Bradley Drummond, have published a new perspective in the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases: Journal of the COPD Foundation. They propose that inhaled Vitamin D, rather than oral supplements, could be a more effective treatment for chronic lung diseases like COPD, asthma, and cystic fibrosis. The current oral delivery method is believed to be ineffective because an enzyme in the lung's blood vessels inactivates Vitamin D before it reaches airway tissue. Direct delivery to the lungs could bypass this problem, potentially reducing inflammation, strengthening lung defenses, and lessening flare-ups. While preclinical models show promise, human clinical trials are needed to confirm safety, optimal dosage, and efficacy.
