UK Mosquito Surge Warning

Current weather conditions in the United Kingdom, characterized by recent rain followed by a heatwave, have created ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, leading to an expert warning of a significant surge in their population. Dr. Mojca Kristan from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has cautioned that while the risk of serious illness from native mosquitoes is low, climate change could make the United Kingdom more hospitable to invasive species like Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti. These species are capable of transmitting viruses such as Dengue fever, Chikungunya, and Zika virus, which are already present in parts of Europe. Modelling studies suggest that by the 2060s, London and surrounding areas could support the endemic transmission of Dengue fever. The public is advised to take precautions like using insect repellent and covering skin to avoid bites.
