Germany Debates Military Conscription

Germany is facing significant challenges in recruiting soldiers and is considering reintroducing compulsory military service by mid-2027 if its voluntary recruitment model fails to meet ambitious troop growth targets. The nation aims to increase its military strength to 260,000 soldiers by 2035 from the current 185,000. This debate is fueled by a growing perceived threat from Russia and the unpredictable security guarantees from the United States. Thomas Roewekamp, chairman of the German parliament's defense committee, has expressed serious doubts about the voluntary system's effectiveness. The discussion has also highlighted a generational divide, with younger Germans largely opposing conscription, as evidenced by protests organized by activists like Bella Breitner. Europe, including Germany, is urged to rearm independently of the United States, developing its own military capabilities based on actual needs rather than industrial interests, a point underscored by past failures like the FCAS fighter jet project involving Airbus and Dassault Aviation. An upcoming NATO summit in Ankara is expected to address the collective determination against Russian aggression.
