The launch of Bharat Taxi, a cooperative ride-hailing platform, is expected to increase competition in the transportation sector, potentially impacting the profitability and market share of existing private aggregators. The focus on driver welfare and competitive pricing could lead to shifts in consumer and driver preferences, influencing investment in ride-hailing technology and services in India.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-based ride-hailing service, in India — Gujarat. This initiative aims to create a fairer transportation ecosystem by ensuring drivers receive a larger share of earnings and are stakeholders in the company, unlike existing private aggregators which Shah accused of exploitation. Bharat Taxi plans to expand to 125 cities and 30 major urban centers across India by March 2027. The service has already enrolled nearly 7 lakh drivers and 38-40 lakh customers. It has signed Memorandums of Understanding with several public sector and institutional partners, including India — Rajasthan Metro Rail Corporation Limited, India — Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, Cooperative Bank of Oromia, Adani Enterprises — Adani Airport Holdings Limited, India — Western Railway zone, and India — Airports Authority of India, to strengthen its operations and integrate with existing transport infrastructure. Bharat Taxi also offers a WhatsApp-based airport booking service and has tied up with State Bank of India for concessional vehicle loans for drivers. The platform will initially cater to two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and auto-rickshaws, and is supported by cooperative institutions like Amul, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative, and India — National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.
