The provisional attachment of properties belonging to Prasanta Kumar Parida by the India — Enforcement Directorate highlights ongoing efforts against financial crime, potentially impacting investor confidence in regions where such illicit activities are exposed. The involvement of shell companies and fictitious shareholders could lead to increased scrutiny on corporate governance and transparency in the real estate and hospitality sectors, particularly in Guwahati and Mumbai.
The India — Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached immovable properties worth approximately Rs 53.28 crore belonging to retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Prasanta Kumar Parida, his family members, and associated companies. The attachment, made under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), follows an FIR registered by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Branch of Assam — Assam Police. Prasanta Kumar Parida is accused of amassing assets disproportionate to his known income during his service from 1992 to 2019, with estimated disproportionate assets around Rs 79.01 crore. The ED's investigation revealed that the alleged proceeds of crime were laundered through three closely held companies: Mahamaya Estates Private Limited, Ishan Commercial Private Limited, and Murari Commodities Private Limited, whose registered offices were found to be non-existent. Unexplained cash amounting to Rs 14.74 crore was allegedly routed through family members and these companies using fictitious shareholders and shell entities, then invested in hotel properties in Guwahati, including Hotel Bhargav Grand, Bhargav Inn, and Hotel Bhargav Grand, and residential flats in Mumbai. Prasanta Kumar Parida also allegedly transferred 3.7 lakh shares of Ishan Commercial Private Limited to his name after retirement, making him the majority shareholder.
