Researchers from Rigshospitalet and the Technical University of Denmark presented new research at the American Academy of Neurology Congress 2026, revealing that a 13-second bedside eye test, focusing on the late light-off response (LOR), can predict recovery of consciousness in patients with severe brain injuries. This new measure was found to be more effective than standard pupil measurements in predicting improvements in consciousness seven days later. The technology, which uses a handheld automated pupillometer, is already available in many ICUs, suggesting potential for easy implementation if further validated.
