A study by the University of Warwick, published in Communications Biology, suggests that great apes, including Chimpanzee, Bonobo, Land Gorilla, and Orangutan, have been laughing with a rhythm similar to humans for at least 15 million years. Researchers Chiara De Gregorio and Adriano Lameira analyzed 140 laughter sequences from these species and humans, finding a consistent rhythmic pattern. This discovery challenges the idea of a sudden leap in human vocal abilities, proposing instead a gradual evolution of vocal control that laid the groundwork for human speech. The study highlights that while the basic rhythm is conserved, human laughter has become faster, more variable, and context-sensitive, indicating enhanced vocal control.
