Tufts Study Links Sweeteners to Metabolism

Researchers from Tufts University's Food is Medicine Institute published a review and meta-analysis in Current Atherosclerosis Reports, indicating that artificial and other non-nutritive sweeteners may disrupt metabolism. The study, led by Meng Wanzhou and Dariush Mozaffarian, analyzed 21 randomized clinical trials and found that these sweeteners raised fasting insulin and HbA1c, and showed a trend toward worsening insulin sensitivity. The findings challenge the assumption that these compounds are inert and suggest a link to altered gut microbiome composition and function. While acknowledging limitations in observational studies, the overall evidence raises concerns about long-term health effects, including increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. The study also highlights a gap in United States labeling policy regarding the quantity of sweeteners in products, hindering comprehensive research.
