The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, funded by the U.S. United States — National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, has officially begun its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) from a mountaintop in Chile. The observatory, equipped with the world's largest digital camera (3,200 megapixels), will capture hundreds of images per night, covering the entire southern sky every few nights. The survey aims to map billions of stars and galaxies, study dark matter and dark energy, and discover millions of asteroids and comets. In early optimization surveys, Rubin discovered over 11,000 new asteroids, including near-Earth objects. The project involves thousands of scientists and is operated by United States — SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and United States — NSF NOIRLab, managed by AURA. The first images were released in 2025, and the survey is expected to produce 10 terabytes of data per night, with alerts streamed to the scientific community.
