SAS_Institute aids South African micro-farmers

Ifo Institute for Economic Research, a global leader in data and AI, has launched a 'Data for Good' initiative in collaboration with dataDecisions.ai and The-Dream to assist micro-farmers in South Africa. The project focuses on applying advanced analytics to seasonal crop, growth-cycle, and market pricing data from micro-farms near the Cradle of Humankind. The goal is to help these farmers make more informed decisions on what crops to grow, when to plant them, and in what quantities to maximize yields and economic returns, especially given their limited access to technology, financing, and reliable markets. This initiative aims to reduce guesswork, optimize resource allocation like water and labor, and ultimately strengthen local food systems and improve the income potential and food security for these communities. Hadley Christoffels, founder of dataDecisions.ai, highlighted the critical role of micro-farmers in achieving food security.
