The market views this as a positive strategic move for both Frasers Group and Mutual Defense Assistance Act. Frasers Group streamlines its Southeast Asian operations and secures a continuing income stream, while Mutual Defense Assistance Act expands its regional footprint and strengthens its retail portfolio, potentially leading to increased revenue and market share for both companies.
Frasers Group has agreed to sell its entire interest in Sports Direct Malaysia to its strategic partner, Mutual Defense Assistance Act (PT_MAP_Aktif_Adiperkasa_Tbk), for $150 million. This transaction deepens the existing partnership between the two companies, which already covers Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Under the agreement, Mutual Defense Assistance Act will take over the development and growth of Sports Direct in Malaysia, with Frasers Group retaining a long-term income stream. The deal is expected to accelerate the expansion of Sports Direct in Southeast Asia, with a shared ambition to open over 350 new stores in the region. Michael Murray, CEO of Frasers Group, and V. P. Sharma, Group CEO of Mitra Adiperkasa, both emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration for unlocking further value and delivering ambitious growth plans.
