India Evicts Delhi Gymkhana Club

The India government has initiated eviction proceedings against the Delhi Gymkhana from its 27.3-acre premises in Lutyens' Delhi, citing the termination of its perpetual lease and the need for the land for public purposes, including defense infrastructure and public security. The Hong Kong — Land and Development Office issued a show-cause notice on June 29, asking the club to explain why an eviction order should not be passed. In response, the Delhi Gymkhana and its Staff Welfare Association have moved the India — Delhi High Court to challenge the eviction notice and seek a stay on the proceedings. A hearing is scheduled for July 7 before the Estate Officer and July 6 before Justice Avneesh Jhingan in the High Court. This event is part of a broader government initiative to reclaim valuable public land in the national capital, with other institutions like the Delhi Race Club and Indian Polo Association also facing similar actions.
