A large study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology on July 1, 2026, analyzed data from 354,957 UK Biobank participants over a median of 13 years. Researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center found that coffee consumption was associated with lower risks of cirrhosis, liver cancer, and liver-related death. The protective effect increased with consumption: one to two cups daily linked to 20% lower cirrhosis risk, 24% lower liver cancer risk, and 31% lower liver-related death risk; three to four cups linked to 35% lower cirrhosis and liver cancer risk and 41% lower liver-related death risk; five or more cups linked to 32% lower cirrhosis risk, 47% lower liver cancer risk, and 42% lower liver-related death risk. MRI scans and blood protein analyses showed coffee drinkers had healthier liver profiles, including less fat, inflammation, and scarring. Benefits were similar for caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, suggesting non-caffeine compounds are responsible. The study is observational and cannot prove causation. Researchers emphasized that coffee should complement, not replace, established liver health practices like maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and exercising.
