This event is expected to have a positive impact on the energy and construction markets in the United Kingdom, as it represents a significant private investment in nuclear power. Companies like Sage Group, GE Vernova, Samsung Electronics, Laing O Rourke, and Aecon are likely to see increased business and stock performance due to their involvement in this large-scale project.
Sage Group, a European Small Modular Reactor (SMR) development and investment platform, has announced plans to build fourteen GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactors across three sites in the United Kingdom. This project, hailed as Britain's largest privately-led nuclear investment, aims to deliver a combined 4.2GW of clean power, capable of supplying 11% of the United Kingdom's power demand or approximately eight million homes for at least sixty years. The deployment team includes Sage Group, GE Vernova, Samsung Electronics, Laing O Rourke, Aecon, Alphabet Inc. — Google Cloud Platform, Fermi Development, and Etar Architectural-Ethnographic Complex. Sage Group has submitted an application under the UK's Advanced Nuclear Framework (ANF) and established Sage Group SMR UK Limited as its dedicated UK project vehicle. The project is targeting three multi-unit sites, with the first to host six BWRX-300 units, and the first commercial operation of a unit is targeted for 2034. The BWRX-300 technology has already completed Step 2 of the UK's Generic Design Assessment and is under licensed construction in Canada.
