The launch by Standard Chartered is expected to increase institutional adoption of USDC (cryptocurrency) and other stablecoins, potentially boosting liquidity and trading volumes in the digital asset market. This move by a Global Systemically Important Bank could also encourage other major financial institutions to integrate similar digital asset services, further bridging traditional finance with the crypto ecosystem.
Standard Chartered, in partnership with Circle Internet Group, has launched a new capability allowing eligible institutional clients to mint and redeem USDC (cryptocurrency) directly through the bank. This makes Standard Chartered the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to offer such integrated access without requiring clients to hold direct accounts with Circle Internet Group. The service, initially available through Standard Chartered's International Finance Corporation operations, aims to simplify institutional interaction with regulated stablecoins for on-chain settlement, treasury, and liquidity management. This initiative reflects growing demand for regulated stablecoin infrastructure and reinforces the United Arab Emirates's position as a digital asset hub. The bank plans to expand this offering to additional markets, subject to regulatory approvals.
