Researchers at Texas A&M University, led by neuroscientist Jun Wang, published a study in Nature Communications showing that animal models of Alzheimer's disease (5xFAD) exhibit impaired cognitive flexibility before memory deficits. The study identified hyperactivity in the medial prefrontal cortex and striatum, and reduced activity in cholinergic interneurons. Targeted reduction of overactive brain circuits improved cognitive flexibility and reduced amyloid-beta accumulation.
