Barcelona rolls out heat-monitoring bracelets

Spain — Barcelona has initiated a program to distribute approximately 1,400 heat-monitoring bracelets to its outdoor workers, including street cleaners, lighting crews, park workers, and waste management employees. This measure is a response to successive heatwaves in Spain, which have caused over 1,000 excess deaths in June and led to fatalities among street workers in recent years. The bracelets are designed to measure body temperature and alert wearers when they are at risk of heatstroke, prompting them to stop working. Pep Llimona, prevention coordinator for Spain — Barcelona's parks and gardens service, stated that the plan was in motion before a worker's death last year but was accelerated by the incident. Spain's weather agency, Spain — State Meteorological Agency, reported June as the second-hottest on record, with another heatwave anticipated.
