The closures reflect broader challenges in the UK retail sector, but BHF's strong online and legacy income may offset the impact. The event is unlikely to significantly affect financial markets given BHF's non-profit status.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) announced the closure of 150 charity shops across the UK, with 87 closing by March 2027 and the remainder by March 2028. The closures are attributed to rising operating costs and changing customer habits, making some stores financially unviable. The charity also plans to reduce central retail support teams. Despite the closures, BHF reports a healthy financial position and will continue online sales via EBay and its website. CEO Dr Charmaine Griffiths and Chief Commercial Officer Allison Swaine-Hughes emphasized the difficult decision to ensure long-term sustainability for funding cardiovascular research.
