The China — Cyberspace Administration of China (CNSA) announced that China's Tianwen-2 probe successfully arrived at a distance of 20 kilometers from the asteroid 469219 Kamoʻoalewa on July 6, 2026. This marks the beginning of scientific exploration after an approximately 400-day journey covering about 1 billion kilometers. Launched on May 29, 2025, the Tianwen-2 mission aims to collect samples from 469219 Kamoʻoalewa and later explore the main-belt comet 311P/PanSTARRS. During its approach, the probe acquired imagery and refined the asteroid's positional uncertainty. The mission will now conduct detailed scientific exploration to gather data on the asteroid's morphology, material composition, and internal structure, preparing for future sample collection operations.
