Australia-Fiji Ocean of Peace Alliance

Australia and Fiji have signed a landmark mutual defense alliance, the Ocean of Peace Alliance, and an economic treaty, the Vuvale Union, on July 6, 2026. This alliance, signed by Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Suva, commits both nations to mutual defense and significantly deepens their security and economic ties. The Vuvale Union includes a commitment of over 1 billion Australian dollars in investment from Australia to Fiji over the next decade. This move is part of Australia's broader strategy to counter China's growing influence in the Pacific, following China's security pact with the Solomon Islands in 2022. Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed that the agreements are not directed against China and should not negatively impact either country's relationship with Beijing. The Ocean of Peace Alliance is Fiji's first mutual defense treaty and Australia's fourth, after similar agreements with the United States, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. New Zealand has expressed interest in joining the alliance, and Australia is also pursuing further security discussions with the Solomon Islands and has recently signed a security agreement with Vanuatu.
