On July 11, 2026, the India — Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth Project 17A Nilgiri-class stealth frigate, at Visakhapatnam. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the ceremony. The frigate, built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and designed by the India — Warship Design Bureau, features over 75% indigenous content and is equipped with BrahMos and Barak-8 missiles, advanced sensors, and stealth technology. It will join the Eastern Fleet, enhancing India's maritime capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region and Indo-Pacific. The commissioning follows the induction of five sister ships since January 2025, with the final ship, INS Vindhyagiri, still under construction.
