A year-long open-label clinical study led by Mass General Brigham investigators found that the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, traditionally used against tuberculosis, remodeled the brain's immune environment and altered Alzheimer's-related biomarkers in older adults without Alzheimer's pathology. The study, published in Communications Medicine, involved 23 adults aged 55 and older. BCG promoted enhanced immune responses without increasing inflammatory markers and shifted amyloid-beta levels in cerebrospinal fluid and blood. No significant effects were observed in participants with existing Alzheimer's pathology. The researchers call for larger placebo-controlled trials to confirm the findings.
