Cummins Inc. has begun updating engine calibrations for over 1.5 million medium and heavy-duty trucks and motorcoaches to extend time before diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) inducements occur and increase final derate speeds. The updates follow revised guidance from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aimed at reducing unnecessary downtime while maintaining emissions compliance. For heavy-duty trucks, final derate speed increases from 5 mph to 25 mph; for motorcoaches, to 50 mph. Brett Merritt, Cummins Engine Business president, expressed appreciation for EPA's engagement. The updates are available for certain models dating back to 2017 (trucks) and 2018 (motorcoaches).
