Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the progress of the Indian Maritime University (IMU), highlighting its emergence as one of the world's top 10 maritime universities and the highest-ranked in India over the past 12 years. The university has transformed from a classroom-centric institution into a hub of research, innovation, and industry collaboration. Key achievements include a rise in patents from one to seven, an increase in IMU-CET registrations from 14,751 in 2014 to 73,395, and an 18-fold increase in girl cadet enrolment. Industry engagement expanded with technical consultancy projects rising from three (worth Rs 63.94 lakh) to 16 (worth Rs 10.78 crore), and the establishment of 22 domestic and four international industry partnerships since 2021. Sonowal proposed a nationwide Maritime Skilling Fair and outlined plans to modernize Mumbai Port and Kolkata Port campuses, establish Centres of Excellence in Shipbuilding and Maritime Skills, and deepen research partnerships. The meeting was attended by Secretary Vijay Kumar and IMU Chairperson Malini V. Shankar.
