A High Court dispute has arisen over a new criminal legal aid payment model for the District Court in Republic of Ireland, which came into effect last week. Under the new model, solicitors receive a flat fee of €520 per case regardless of the number of court appearances, replacing the previous system based on appearances. Solicitor John Quinn, of John M. Quinn & Co. Solicitors, has been granted permission to bring an action seeking to quash the statutory instrument underpinning the regulations. He is suing the Minister for Justice, with the Law Society of Ireland as a notice party. The parties are seeking an expedited hearing before the end of the legal term, and an interim stay on the regulations may be sought if a hearing is not possible. The case was adjourned to Thursday.
