A large Swedish study led by Chalmers University of Technology, published in Cell Reports Medicine, found that changes in gut microbiota can predict type 2 diabetes years before diagnosis. The study analyzed stool samples from 4,685 Swedish adults, tracking them for an average of five years, during which 383 developed diabetes. Nine bacterial species were linked to future diabetes risk, including Akkermansia muciniphila, which was harmful when fiber intake was low, and Coprococcus catus, which was protective at higher levels. The findings suggest gut bacteria could serve as early biomarkers and targets for personalized prevention. The research was funded by the European Union's HealthFerm project and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation.
