Athena Insights, a new nonprofit, released its first 'Americans on AI' poll on July 7, 2026, showing that Americans are nearly three times as likely to be concerned (65% combined very/somewhat concerned) as excited (24% combined very/somewhat excited) about AI's growing role in society. The survey of 1,814 Americans, conducted June 24-29 with a 3.4 percentage point margin of error, found 70% feel AI is entering their lives whether they want it or not, and 70% struggle to distinguish real from AI-generated content. The poll will be administered biweekly for a year to track changes in public opinion. Researchers noted that concerns cross party lines, with Democrats more critical of government action on AI's impact on workers and the environment. The poll was fielded by NORC at the University of Chicago in partnership with Early Studies.
