The deepening of India-France cooperation in critical minerals signals a strategic shift toward diversifying supply chains, which could reduce price volatility and supply risks for key industrial inputs. This may positively affect companies in the mining and battery supply chain sectors in both countries, while increasing competition for dominant suppliers like China.

On July 6-7, 2026, France's Interministerial Delegate for Strategic Minerals and Metals Supplies Benjamin Gallezot visited New Delhi to co-chair the first India-France Joint Working Group on Critical Minerals with Joint Secretary Kadam Sandeep Vasant of India's Ministry of Mines. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in exploration, processing, and recycling of critical minerals and rare earth elements to build resilient and sustainable supply chains. Experts from France's France — Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) and the India — Archaeological Survey of India (GSI) agreed to deepen scientific cooperation across the value chain. Gallezot also met Deputy National Security Advisor Pavan Kapoor and interacted with industry representatives via the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CII). The working group builds on the France-India Joint Declaration of Intent on Cooperation in Critical Minerals signed during President Emmanuel Macron's visit to India in February 2026. The partnership aims to reduce dependence on single supply sources and secure access to minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, and rare earths essential for batteries, EVs, semiconductors, and renewable energy technologies.
