The resolution may increase political will and funding for NTD elimination, benefiting pharmaceutical companies developing treatments and diagnostics. It could also boost advocacy organizations and public health initiatives in affected regions.
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) adopted Resolution 62/27 on 'Human rights and neglected tropical diseases' at its sixty-second session in Geneva. The first-ever HRC resolution dedicated to all neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) was led by Malawi and co-sponsored by Burkina Faso, Kenya, Tanzania, The Gambia, and Morocco. The resolution recognizes NTDs as both a public health and human rights issue, emphasizing that they reflect and reinforce inequality, discrimination, and social exclusion. It calls on states to strengthen efforts to address NTDs and requests the United Nations Human Rights Council (OHCHR) to prepare a comprehensive report by 2027. The adoption was welcomed by WHO, OHCHR, Uniting to Combat NTDs, and Rabo Foundation.
