The approval is a positive development for Wellspring University, enhancing its academic portfolio and reputation. It may attract more students and revenue, but the impact on the broader education and healthcare sectors is limited.
Wellspring University, Benin City, has secured approval from the Nigeria — National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence five new undergraduate health programmes from the 2026/2027 academic session. The approved programmes are Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS); B.Sc. Human Anatomy; B.Sc. Human Physiology; Bachelor of Health Information Management; and Bachelor of Community Health Science. The approval followed a resource verification exercise by NUC experts in April 2026. Vice-Chancellor Isaac Rotimi Ajayi announced the milestone, noting significant investments in facilities and staff. The university aims to address Nigeria's healthcare workforce shortage.
