Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have detected an unexplained infrared absorption feature at 5.113 micrometers on both Saturn's moon Titan and the dwarf planet Pluto. The signal, observed by two different JWST instruments, does not match any known compound in spectroscopic databases. The discovery, led by Bruno Bézard of the France — Paris Observatory and the France — French National Centre for Scientific Research, suggests a shared prebiotic chemistry on nitrogen-methane worlds. The feature likely originates from the surfaces, not atmospheres, and may be due to allenes or other complex organics. Further observations and United States — NASA's Dragonfly mission, arriving in the mid-2030s, may help identify the compound. The study has been accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics.
