Airbus and MTU Aero Engines have announced a non-binding agreement to form a joint venture dedicated to developing and commercializing a fully electric hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system for commercial aircraft. The JV builds on a memorandum of understanding signed at the 2025 Paris Air Show and is expected to start operations in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals. The partners aim to accelerate technology development, design, testing, and certification of a revolutionary propulsion system that produces only water vapor. Airbus contributes its commercial aircraft and fuel cell expertise from its ZEROe program, while MTU brings its Flying Fuel Cell and HEROPS projects, as well as its subsidiary eMoSys. The JV will also support the broader hydrogen aviation economy and regulatory framework.
