Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, General Phan Văn Giang, paid an official visit to Japan from July 12-15, 2026. During the visit, he met with Japanese Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara, and other officials. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World. They discussed expanding defence cooperation in areas such as training, defence industry, technology transfer, cybersecurity, and war legacy settlement. Giang invited Japanese defence leaders to the third Vietnam International Defence Expo in December 2026. The visit also included a meeting with Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Naoki Ito prior to the trip. The discussions underscored mutual interests in regional stability and the peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea.
