Tamil Nadu challenges SC on reservation for converts

The India — Tamil Nadu government has filed a Special Leave Petition in the India — Supreme Court of India challenging a India — Madras High Court judgment that struck down a 2024 Government Order. The GO allowed individuals from Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Denotified Communities, and Scheduled Castes who converted to Islam to continue availing reservation benefits under the Backward Class Muslim category. The High Court ruled that conversion alone does not entitle a person to membership of a specific notified Muslim community, which are birth-based. The case originated from Sameer Ahamed's petition after his application for a 'Muslim Lebbai' community certificate was rejected. The state argues that conversion does not erase social and educational disadvantages.
