The potential sale would allow Tesco to focus on its dominant UK operations and could provide funds for price cuts and investment. However, the European division's small profit contribution means the impact on Tesco's overall financials is limited.

Tesco is reportedly exploring a sale of its central and eastern European operations in Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, according to the Financial Times. The move would end Tesco's three-decade international expansion strategy and refocus the company on its core UK and Ireland markets. The division operates 561 stores, employs over 22,000 people, and generated £4.5 billion in revenue but only £115 million in adjusted operating profit in the 2025-26 financial year. Tesco has declined to comment on the speculation. A sale would follow a series of international disposals since a 2014 accounting scandal, including exits from South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and the US. Proceeds could strengthen Tesco's ability to invest in its UK business, where it holds a 28% market share. The company has faced competitive pressure from discounters Aldi and Lidl and regulatory challenges in the region.
