National Aluminium Company (Nalco) and NLC India Limited (NLCIL) signed a joint venture agreement on July 8, 2026, to establish a 1,080 MW thermal captive power plant at Angul, India — Odisha. The 50:50 joint venture company will develop a 4x270 MW coal-based plant to supply captive power to Nalco's 0.5 MTPA aluminium smelter expansion project, expected to be commissioned by 2030-31. The JV will also explore 200-250 MW of firm renewable energy and secure long-term coal supply from NLCIL's Machhakata mine. The agreement was signed in the presence of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and senior officials from the Ministry of Mines and India — Ministry of Coal. This partnership strengthens collaboration between two Navratna CPSEs and supports India's energy security and industrial growth.
